“BOOM! It’s a Big Country for an Old Man”

A book by John Van Dyke

As an E-book, Hardcover, and Paperback.

“I’ve seen a lot of really weird stuff, but the weirdest thing recently for me is you in the cab, asking about my life and recording the conversation.”

Brian, truck driver at a truck stop in Moberly, Missouri

I did not expect to write a book when I started in 2017, on a journey trying to understand my country. Not sure what I expected, but I knew I needed to understand what was happening to us. I traveled on road trips around the country, approaching strangers and asking if they would talk to me. My little video outfit gave it an air of importance, recording them as we talked, and almost all of the 130 were eager to talk. Surprised that someone wanted to hear their story. I humbly share that experience, talking about what I found on the road.

John Van Dyke

“Like many Americans, I am dismayed by the political schism in this country that has torn apart friendships and even families while it worsens every day. Van Dyke's project to travel the country and talk to ordinary people from all walks of life was an inspiration and the things he learned can show us all the power of listening--really listening--to others.” — Reader Review

“While it most certainly delivers insight and understanding, for me, this book delivered wonder. John Van Dyke's wondering — his personal quest to better understand the why behind the what of 2020s America — makes for compelling reading.” — Reader Review
